After a short drive about 2.5 miles, we follow Columbus Avenue. It is at the crossroads with Lombard Street we deposited our driver.
Lombard Street, a street quite ordinary a priori, except that it climbs. And it makes you quickly realize, when you are on foot, believe me! Go, hop, courage, follow me!
San Francisco - Lombard Street |
We are here in the Russian Hill neighborhood, one of the forty hills of San Francisco. After 350 meters, we find "the crookedest street," the most crooked street in the United States. In fact this road is 4.5 km long, but it is known for a very small part, on one block only. Famous and very photogenic, especially when the number of clumps that adorn the years since 1920 are in bloom.
between Leavenworth Street and Hyde Street, there are no fewer than eight hairpin turns on this slope of 27 °. With this artifice, we significantly reduced the slope of almost half in the life of local residents. Only in the movies we will see car chases. And it is undoubtedly because it is also known to be very windy that the nickname "Windy Windy Windy Windy Street" in a video game Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas .
From the green up there in the middle of the street? |
On the right side is a stairway for pedestrians. This also admire quietly, and at their own pace, houses with flowers, but also the view that, as often happens here is breathtaking, from the moment it takes a little height.
By car, and only down, but some are several times around ... |
When you arrive at the top of the hill, we crossed Hyde Street, where the line passes Powell / Hyde Cable Car, with a direct descent on Fisherman's Wharf and opposite the island of ' Alcatraz.
Here, even the houses are blooming ... |
Behind us, on the east, one sees Coit Tower, Bay Bridge, the Island of Yerba Buena and the Transamerica Pyramid. Looking good, you can even see construction of the new bridge. Feel free to watch the slideshow to watch the pictures that I could not include in this article, lack of space.
Beware, it turns! |
front of us, west, Lombard Street, much larger, will be lost in Park Presidio. And, on that side, we see that it goes down! Russian Hill, I told you ... a roller coaster, with their attractions size!
foot, you can see the Bay Bridge and Transamerica Pyramid |
This street party is one way, one can only go down by car eastward. Well i guess ill do the same bus! And speaking of buses, it is already waiting for us, two blocks lower on Polk Street.
Coit Tower and Bay Bridge, seen from Lombard Street |
I can assure you, once again, we do not regret this (small) effort, especially as this portion of the street does is ultimately no more than 130 meters ... or 200 meters by taking the red tiles of the floor. Yes, well, I know, it climbs, but nothing in the world, do miss it.
note, brace yourself, it's going down! |
Know that there is another way to go, it seems. A legend indeed promises happiness to those who fall together. It's true, we have not had not warned before.
Lombard Street, west side, is immersed in the Presidio, at the bottom |
And there it is, some (s) are ready (e) s to go back! Yes, yes, I have names, you want them?
