New regulation requires EU, France will switch to biometric passports as of June 29, 2009.
Departments are deployed progressively. The mayors of 36 000 French municipalities are not equipped for fingerprinting. first phase covers about two thousand mayors. It should therefore check with the town hall to see if it delivers the new biometric passports.
Applicants must go to the nearest town council with a station.
Town halls devoid of registration station no longer receive passport applications but will continue to process applications for a national identity card.
- How different from the e-passport?
The electronic passport contained a microchip which were recorded all the vital statistics of the first page and the passport photo in digital format. The passport will include more biometric fingerprints of two fingers scanned the holder of the document.
- Validity of previous passports
If you have an electronic passport valid, you do not have to replace it with a biometric passport. Your e-passports will remain valid until its expiration date.
- How will the data recording?
By summer 2009, twenty councils by department will be equipped with machines that will record the pictures and fingerprints scanned. These will then be inserted into the chip for biometric passports.
