History Yosemite began there 500 million years ago, when shallow oceans covered western North America today. These waters have deposited sedimentary rocks. There are about 120 million years, two major tectonic plates collided. One of the plates was pushed under another, and this friction has caused the melting of the rock. Part of the molten rock is rising to the surface as volcanoes, while the remaining solidified underground to form granite. Erosion has washed away the sedimentary rock and exposed granite in many places. Glaciers then eroded the rock to shape the landscape we know today. Weathering and erosion continue to transform the face of Yosemite.
